Summary
Due to "equivocation slash," Nodeplus received "unapplied slash" in VARA at era 327. The total amount that could be slashed is 161,689.4797 VARA.
If no action is done, unapplied status will be applied in era 341. It is, however, reversible by government action.
This proposal is to provide details about what occurred and to request a revert in order to minimize nominators' losses.
What Happened
Nodeplus carried out a planned system migration to migrate a VARA validator on December 23, 2023. The operator installed the new validator by utilizing a snapshot disk of the old validator. He planned to delete the old keystore file manually and generate new session keys on the new validator. The validator instance, on the other hand, launched automatically when the server booted, and he failed to shut it down in time. As a result, running two validators at the same time produced an equivocation slash.
Nodeplus has taken the following actions to minimize the loss:
- Postponed any remaining migration work immediately.
- Held an internal meeting to assess the damage and discuss possible solutions.
- Contacted VARA with details and proposed a referendum requesting reversal
What's Next
We plan to create a more detailed operating manual, especially for more dangerous activities like validator migration. The documentation will be available on Github. In addition, we will conduct frequent training and review in order to guarantee that the manual is correctly understood and applied.
